Job Description

At Thames Reach we are committed to helping homeless and vulnerable people to live in decent homes, build supportive relationships and lead fulfilling lives. Our vision is to end street homelessness and our aim is to achieve the highest standards and effectiveness in service delivery to vulnerable people.

We are recruiting two Support Workers for our Waterloo Project, a 19 bed-space hostel close to London’s Southbank, where we support clients to make positive changes in their lives and move on to more independent and longer-term accommodation. The Waterloo Project works in partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Mental Health Trust to deliver the ‘Psychology in Hostels’ service. The Waterloo Project was one of the first hostels in the UK to implement this model adopting a trauma informed approach to working with vulnerable people with complex needs. Clinical psychologists provide advice, support and expertise to staff and residents to create a ‘psychologically informed environment’.

Successful candidates will be committed and well organised, assertive and persistent, able to give difficult messages and still get positive outcomes for our clients.  Ideally you will have some  knowledge and/or experience of working with homeless or vulnerable people with support needs, however, we will consider career changers or graduates with transferable knowledge and skills.

This is an extremely rewarding role that requires you to support our clients to view their stay in a hostel as a temporary step on a journey to independence and self-sufficiency.

You will have:

  • The ability to provide a flexible, empathetic and responsive service to meet the needs of hostel residents.
  • Excellent communication and creative problem-solving skills enabling you to create options for people where these may be hard to find.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to working with service users.
  • The confidence, enthusiasm and ability to manage a case load.
  • The ability to work within a team and to ensure health and safety requirements are followed.
  • Excellent I.T. skills
  • A desire to develop your knowledge and skills.

You will work morning, mid and late shifts during the week and the weekend.

As well as a great working environment, we also offer:

  • Support to develop your case working skills and specialist knowledge.
  • 6.5% employer & 1.5% employee contributory pension scheme, tuition aid and role-specific training.
  • 29 days holiday and 8 paid bank holidays.

Thames Reach is committed to achieving a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We value, respect, and celebrate diversity. We welcome and encourage applicants from all sections of the community regardless of their history of homelessness, sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, or religious belief.
