Job Description

We welcome applications from people with lived experience of the issues faced by the people we support such as homelessness, substance use, imprisonment and mental health difficulties.

Central London, like many cities across the world, is an exciting and stimulating place. However, for some, it is a place to go when things have gone profoundly wrong and there is nowhere else.

When people are on the edge, homeless, isolated and in despair, there must be a place to turn. The Connection is there to be with people as they overcome that isolation, recover and move on to a meaningful, fulfilling life.

By joining The Connection as a volunteer, you will play a meaningful role in being there for people at their most vulnerable and enabling them to change their lives for the better.

Aim of Volunteering Role: To manage the Homeless Health Team’s (NHS) patient list on Thursdays, whilst developing rapport with the people we support and our nurses.

Tasks & Activities:

  • Write down the names of the people who would like to see a nurse on a list.
  • Take people to the consultation room when it is time for their appointment.
  • Reassure people waiting for an appointment, letting them know when it is their turn.
  • Liaise with staff at reception to check on our database (In-Form) whether there is a no-lone working alert for each person who is seeing a nurse.
  • Build a supportive partnership with the Homeless Health Team.
  • Help maintain a positive, safe and relaxed atmosphere in the centre.

We recognise that volunteers have different strengths, want to gain different skills and that roles may change over time. Adaptations or changes to the roles will be reviewed in regular meetings with your supervisor.

Our Expectations:

  • Attend each of your volunteering shifts reliably at the agreed time.
  • Maintain boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Are polite and respectful whilst volunteering.
  • Contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Qualities & Experience:

  • You are confident interacting with people and have a friendly nature.
  • You are able to read and write so you can take names down for the list.
  • You understand the fears people may have when attending a medical appointment and how these might be harder to overcome when homeless (desirable).
