Job Description

At Thames Reach we are driven and committed to helping homeless and vulnerable people to live in decent homes, build supportive relationships and lead fulfilling lives. Our vision is to end street homelessness and our aim is to achieve the highest standards and effectiveness in service delivery to vulnerable people.

We are recruiting an Assistant Support Worker for our Waterloo Project, a 19 bed-space hostel close to London’s Southbank, where we support clients to make positive changes in their lives and move on to more independent and longer-term accommodation. The Waterloo Project works in partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Mental Health Trust to deliver the ‘Psychology in Hostels’ service. The Waterloo Project was one of the first hostels in the UK to implement this model adopting a trauma informed approach to working with vulnerable people with complex needs. Clinical psychologists provide advice, support and expertise to staff and residents to create a ‘psychologically informed environment’.

Our Assistant Support Workers play a pivotal part in our inspiring work, helping homeless and vulnerable people to live in decent homes, build supportive relationships and lead fulfilling lives.

With the help of our experienced colleagues, you will be supported and trained to use your strong communication and creative problem-solving skills. You will receive regular supervision to both guide your work and encourage and facilitate your personal development.

This is an extremely rewarding role that requires you to support our service users to view their stay in a hostel as temporary, to encourage them to become more independent and self-sufficient. Ideally you will have some  knowledge and/or experience of working with homeless or vulnerable people with support needs, however, we will consider career changers or graduates with transferable knowledge and skills.

You will work in a hostel, where you will be expected to be flexible as you will be needed to cover morning, middle and late shifts during the week and the weekend.

As an Assistant Support Worker you will:

  • Support our service users with practical tasks that will enable them to sustain their hostel accommodation.
  • Assist senior staff to manage the health and safety of the hostel.
  • Support links with community programmes and resources.
  • Ensure that all paperwork is completed and work is recorded and monitored.

And have:

  • A commitment to providing a high standard of service.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Honesty, reliability and a mature and thoughtful approach to equal opportunities and diversity in service provision.
  • The ability to learn and an enthusiasm for training and acquiring new skills.

As well as a great working environment, we also offer:

  • Support to develop your case working skills and specialist knowledge.
  • 6.5% employer & 1.5% employee contributory pension scheme, tuition aid and role-specific training.
  • 29 days holiday and 8 paid bank holidays.

Thames Reach is committed to achieving a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We value, respect, and celebrate diversity. We welcome and encourage applicants from all sections of the community regardless of their history of homelessness, sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, or religious belief.
